The tropical paradise island of Tahiti is situated in the middle of the South Pacific Ocean between Australia and South America.
The island is part of the 118 islands of French Polynesia that are about eight hours by air from Los Angeles and midway between Hawaii and Fiji.
Tahiti, is the largest of these islands and home to capital city, Papeete. Other popular islands close by include Moorea and Bora Bora which is one of the most famous places in the region.
The island has a population of around 160,000 people and is composed of two volcanic mountain ranges known as Tahiti Nui (the larger part) and Tahiti Iti (the peninsula). The two islands are linked by the isthmus of Taravao and skirted by black beaches.
The Island made the headlines in recent times thanks to its football team making it to the 2013 FIFA Confederations Cup tournament in Brazil.
