    Brazil has had a fine history of showcasing the very best in the beautiful game of football for many decades so it is a fitting tribute that the country has been selected to stage a world cup event in the modern era.

    With a population of around 190 million people from a diverse cultural mix largely comprising of indigenous people, Europeans and Africans, Brazil has a rich culture in sports but football dominates more than any other.

    Brazil will stage the 2014 world cup in the cities of: Belo Horizonte, Brasilia, Cuiabá, Curitiba, Fortaleza, Manaus, Natal, Porto Alegre, Recife, Rio de Janeiro, Salvador and São Paulo.

     

    Belo Horizonte

    Belo Horizonte is the sixth largest city in Brazil and is located in the southeast of the country. The city is built on a series of hills that are surrounded by part of the Espinhaco mountain chain. Belo Horizonte will host the world cup in the Mineirao stadium which has a capacity of 70,000.

    Brasilia

    Brasilia is the capital city of Brazil and will play host to the world cup with matches staged in the Estadio Nacional de Brasilia. The seating capacity of the stadium will be increased for the world cup from its 45,000  to 71,000 seats.

    Cuiabá

    Cuiaba lies in the middle of  Brazil and will have a new 45,000 seating capacity stadium built for the 2014 world cup.

     
    Curitiba

    Curitiba is in Paraná the southernmost province of Brazil. The Arena da Baixada in the city will play host to the 2014 world cup having undergone extensive refurbishments.

    Fortaleza

    Fortaleza is located in the north east of Brazil and it is the capital city of the state of Ceará. Fortaleza is the fifth largest city in Brazil and will play host to the 2014 World Cup tournament at the Castelão stadium which has been revamped and expanded to hold over 58,000 fans.
